Cycling Feast and Famine
Most people never think about skipping a meal much less not eating for the whole day. But historically humans had long periods when food was not available. And in fact, humans probably spent more time in a fasting period as food only came around occasionally. Fasting was also historically common in all religions thus supporting the idea that fasting is not a fad diet but part of our history and evolution. Periods of fasting are still part of our normal biology - a way for the body to heal and rejuvenate.
Valter Longo Ph.D., professor of gerontology and biological sciences at the University of Southern California and director of The Longevity Institute has done extensive research on fasting and health. His studies showed that with fasting the body goes into a very protective mode and shields the body’s healthy cells while clearing any damaged cells. Visceral fat (internal abdominal fat) becomes the source of fuel for the body as it burns fat for fuel. These ketone bodies are a great source of fuel for both your body and brain. Interestingly, during the fasting state, there is no loss of muscle or subcutaneous fat which is very important.
Fasting not only destroys many damaged cells and damaged components inside the cell but also triggers stem cells. With refeeding, the activated stem cells initiate rebuilding of your body’s cells and organs. These new cells are healthy and will rejuvenate the body to a more youthful level. Longo’s studies also showed that after the five day fast, the body continued the abdominal/visceral fat burning mode even after returning to a normal diet. (Probably due to epigenetic changes, which are modifications of the DNA and proteins that bind to DNA).
Fasting Mimicking Diet
Fasting for 5 days can be very difficult and stressful for many people so Dr. Longo created the fasting mimicking diet (FMD) that parallels a 5-day water fast. He has shown the same results in his studies with the FMD as with a water fast. All of the food for the 5 days comes in a box called ProLon making it easy to follow a FMD. The ratios of fats, carbohydrates and proteins is crucial, and he makes it easy to follow. (Dr. Longo does not take any profit from sales of this product as it all goes back into research and charity.) Dr. Longo has also done trials with favorable results looking at the FMD with cancer, autoimmune diseases, Alzheimer's, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and others. These clinical trials are continuing and will change the way that we treat disease.
