A DNA Report Is Not a Longevity Plan.
Most genomic tests generate an enormous amount of information. Information alone is not the same as clinical clarity.
A single gene variant rarely explains a complex health problem. It also rarely determines whether someone will eventually develop a chronic disease. Most common conditions emerge from the interaction between many genes, current physiology, environment, lifestyle, age, and accumulated biological stress.
That is why we do not chase every gene variant or build protocols around isolated “red flags.” We look for meaningful patterns across biological pathways.
For every meaningful finding, we ask:
Does this finding help explain what is happening now?
Does it identify a vulnerability we should monitor?
Is the risk meaningfully modifiable?
Does it change what we would recommend?
Where does it belong in the proper sequence of care?

Genomics serves two very different types of patients at The Johnson Center. The right starting point depends on what your biology is asking for now.

What Your Genomic Profile Can Help Us Understand.
Cognitive Health & Memory We look beyond a single gene such as APOE. Your cognitive health may also be influenced by inflammation, vascular function, lipid transport, blood-brain barrier integrity, methylation, nutrient metabolism, detoxification, oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, sleep biology, and the way your nervous system responds to stress. The goal is not to frighten you with a risk designation. It is to identify the pathways most relevant to protecting cognitive function over time.
Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health Genomic patterns may provide additional insight into lipid metabolism, vascular function, blood pressure regulation, insulin signaling, glucose control, inflammation, clotting tendencies, nitric oxide production, and other pathways that contribute to cardiometabolic risk. These findings must still be interpreted alongside blood pressure, body composition, glucose markers, lipids, fitness, family history, lifestyle, and current clinical findings.
Mitochondria and Cellular Energy Some people are genetically more vulnerable to oxidative stress, reduced antioxidant capacity, impaired nutrient utilization, or less efficient mitochondrial function. This does not mean their energy production is permanently impaired. It may help explain why certain people lose resilience more quickly under chronic stress, illness, hormonal transition, environmental exposure, poor sleep, or excessive training.
Inflammation and Immune Regulation Genomic testing may identify patterns that affect inflammatory signaling, immune balance, histamine response, oxidative stress, and the way the body responds to infection, toxins, food exposures, or other biological stressors. These findings help us understand susceptibility. Functional testing helps us determine what is active now.
Detoxification and Environmental Response People differ in their ability to process medications, hormones, environmental chemicals, oxidative byproducts, alcohol, smoke, and other exposures. Genomic patterns may help us identify people who require greater attention to exposure reduction, antioxidant support, liver pathways, or environmental medicine.
Hormone, Thyroid and Stress Signaling Your genes may influence hormone synthesis, conversion, transport, receptor activity, metabolism, and clearance. They may also affect cortisol signaling, catecholamine breakdown, stress sensitivity, sleep-wake regulation, and the rate at which your body returns to baseline after a challenge. This can help explain why two people exposed to the same stressor—or given the same hormone treatment—may respond very differently.
Nutrient, Metabolism and Methylation Genomics may reveal differences in how you absorb, transport, activate, use, or recycle specific nutrients. It can also help clarify pathways involving methylation, homocysteine, folate, B vitamins, choline, vitamin D, antioxidants, and other nutrients involved in cellular function. The answer is not automatically to take more supplements. The answer is to identify what is clinically relevant and confirm what your body actually needs.
Medication Response Selected genomic findings may help inform discussions about how a person metabolizes or responds to certain medications. Genomics does not replace clinical judgment, medication history, current laboratory testing, or appropriate prescribing standards. It provides one additional layer of information that may improve decision-making.

Genomics is powerful when its capabilities and its limitations are explained with equal care.
IMPORTANT DISTINCTION
Health-optimization genomics does not replace diagnostic genetic testing or genetic counseling when an inherited disorder or hereditary syndrome is suspected.
What is the difference between genetics and genomics? Genetics commonly focuses on individual genes and inherited conditions that may be passed through families. Genomics takes a broader view. It examines patterns across many genes and considers how those genes may interact with one another, your environment, lifestyle, and current biology. At The Johnson Center, we primarily use genomics to better understand susceptibility, biological pathways, and opportunities for more personalized health and longevity planning.
What if I have an APOE Variation? APOE is important, but it is not the entire cognitive-health story. We also examine pathways involving inflammation, lipid transport, vascular health, methylation, nutrient metabolism, detoxification, oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, and other factors that can influence cognitive resilience. The objective is not merely to identify APOE status. It is to understand the larger biological context and determine what deserves attention.
Can't I just use my consumer DNA Testing? Consumer DNA services may provide ancestry information, selected health-risk estimates, or access to raw genetic data. Clinical genomic interpretation is different. It involves selecting an appropriate test, examining patterns across multiple pathways, understanding the strength and limitations of the evidence, and integrating the findings with your clinical history and current physiology. A file containing genetic variants is not the same as a physician-guided health strategy.
Is genomic testing helpful if I already feel healthy? Yes. This is one of its most valuable applications. Genomics can help healthy adults understand areas of susceptibility and build a more personalized strategy before symptoms or standard laboratory abnormalities emerge. It is especially relevant for people with a strong family history or those who want a scientifically grounded longevity strategy rather than generalized advice.
How often should genomic testing be repeated? Your underlying DNA generally does not change, so comprehensive genomic testing is usually performed once. However, scientific understanding continues to evolve, and the relevance of different findings can change as your health, age, environment, and clinical circumstances change.
Is genomics part of a longevity program? Yes. Comprehensive clinical genomics is a central component of the 12-Month Longevity Program. Symptomatic patients typically begin through the Cellular Intelligence Protocol™ so that active cellular and functional dysfunction can be evaluated and addressed before genomic longevity recommendations are fully developed.
How does this differ from genetic testing and genetic counseling? Clinical genomics for health optimization and longevity does not replace diagnostic testing for suspected inherited disorders, hereditary cancer syndromes, or other pathogenic genetic conditions. When your history or results suggest that formal diagnostic testing or genetic counseling is appropriate, we will recommend referral to the appropriate specialist.
How is my genomic information protected? Genomic information is sensitive health information. We use established clinical testing resources and encourage every patient to understand the applicable consent, storage, access, and privacy policies before proceeding. We will answer your questions about how testing is ordered, how results are received, and how the information is used within your care.
