FOUNDER & MEDICAL DIRECTOR
Barbara Johnson, MD
Before medicine, there was ballet.
That's not a detail most physician bios include. But it's the foundation of everything that followed — because professional dance training teaches you, early and viscerally, that the relationship between mental state, biological performance, and physical output is not metaphorical. It is measurable. That education never left.
What followed was three decades in medicine — first as a general and trauma surgeon, one of the highest-stress clinical environments the field offers. Sustained sympathetic activation, irregular sleep, real-time life-and-death decisions, for years. From the outside: a high-performing physician doing everything right. In hindsight: a cellular energy system being drawn down one emergency at a time.
It came due at 45, in the form of a multiple sclerosis diagnosis.
Conventional medicine offered a management path. Dr. Johnson chose a different question: not how to manage the disease — but why the biological transition had failed, and what it would actually take to complete it.
The answer to that question is the Cellular Intelligence Protocol™. She built it because she needed it. Then she spent the next 20 years watching the same pattern appear in patient after patient — high-achieving, health-conscious, arriving at a biological turning point already depleted — and applying what she had learned.

Age 22-25
The Discipline Foundation
Professional ballet training. A dancer's body learns early what most physicians never fully grasp: the relationship between physical discipline, mental state, and biological performance is not metaphorical. It is measurable.
Age 45
The Wave Hits - Already Depleted
Multiple sclerosis diagnosis. Fifteen years of surgical stress had consumed the cellular reserve the biological reorganization required. Conventional medicine offered management. Dr. Johnson chose to understand the mechanism instead.
30s to 40s
The Surgical Years
General and trauma surgery. One of the highest-stress clinical environments medicine offers — sustained sympathetic dominance, irregular sleep, life-and-death decisions in real time, for years. The allostatic debt was accumulating.

Age 45 to Present
The Decades of Reconstruction - and the Proof
More than two decades of advanced training in functional medicine, cellular biology, and psychoneuroimmunology — pursued first as a personal protocol. The three-pillar framework that became the CIP™ was developed on herself first. At 67, Dr. Johnson is healthier, sharper, and more resilient than she was at 40 — and she has never stopped. She continues to study and apply the latest advances in cellular and longevity science, refining the protocol with every new finding. The science confirmed what the clinical outcome demonstrated: the biological transition can be completed, and the gains can be sustained for decades.
"The disease was not the MS. The disease was arriving at the biological transition already depleted — and having no cellular reserve left to complete it."

WHY IT MATTERS THAT A PHYSICIAN IS IN CHARGE
This Is Not a Wellness Center
With Medical Oversight.
Dr. Johnson holds a fellowship in cellular and longevity medicine and spent 20 years as a surgeon and functional medicine physician before founding The Johnson Center.
That clinical depth is structural, not decorative. It means:
Advanced biomarker panels can be interpreted — not just ordered
Complex hormone protocols are managed at the cellular receptor level, not just by lab values
Pathology that must be ruled out before optimization begins gets identified
The full picture of what's happening in your biology is visible — including what your previous doctor missed
Every treatment protocol at The Johnson Center is personally researched and overseen by Dr. Johnson. The team she has built around her was selected for the same standard: root-cause thinking, mechanistic depth, and the clinical patience to work with a patient's full history rather than manage individual symptoms.
The Cellular Intelligence Protocol™ is the direct product of that depth. Dr. Johnson developed the CIP™ from 30 years of clinical practice — first in the operating room as a general and trauma surgeon, where she learned how the body fails under sustained stress, and then through years of advanced training and practice in functional medicine, cellular biology, and psychoneuroimmunology, where she learned how it rebuilds. The result is not a biohacking program or a supplement stack rebranded as longevity. It is a physician-built, sequenced medical protocol designed to resolve dysfunction at the cellular level — and it is the foundation of every treatment plan at this practice.
THE TEAM
Every Provider Here Came to
Functional Medicine the Hard Way.
Not through a weekend certification. Through years of watching conventional medicine fail patients — and in several cases, themselves. That's the standard Dr. Johnson built this practice around.
Every practitioner at The Johnson Center has been directly trained in the Cellular Intelligence Protocol™. It is not optional continuing education — it is the clinical foundation of the practice. The Johnson Center only brings on providers who demonstrate the ability to interpret the protocol at the mechanistic level and apply it to help patients achieve measurable outcomes in longevity and optimal health.

Amanda Hudgins, DNP, FNP-C
NURSE PRACTITIONER | BLACKSBURG
Amanda is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner who has been part of The Johnson Center team since 2018. She began her journey with the practice as a registered nurse and has since advanced into her current role after earning her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). Her transition into functional medicine was inspired by her own personal health journey as a patient at The Johnson Center, where she experienced firsthand the transformative impact of individualized, root-cause care. Amanda has trained closely with Dr. Johnson for several years, integrating functional medicine principles into her clinical practice. Her approach focuses on identifying and addressing the underlying causes of chronic symptoms through personalized strategies involving nutrition, lifestyle, targeted supplementation, and advanced testing

Kristina McIrvin, FNP-C
NURSE PRACTITIONER | BLACKSBURG
Kristina is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with a strong clinical background in critical care and emergency medicine. Throughout her years in acute care, she treated countless patients suffering from complications of chronic illness and the side effects of long-term medication use. These experiences led her to recognize the profound need for a preventative, root-cause approach to health — one that conventional emergency settings rarely allow time to explore. In 2023, Kristina transitioned to functional medicine by joining the Johnson Center, where she is now able to focus on helping patients prevent, manage, and even reverse chronic conditions through evidence-based, lifestyle-driven care.

WHAT EVERY PATIENT GETS
The Clinical Standard
Physician Reviewed Protocols
Every treatment plan is personally overseen by Dr. Johnson — not delegated to administrative templates.
The Correct Sequence
CDR resolution before bioenergetic reconstruction before hormonal optimization. The order is not a preference. It is what cellular biology requires.
Four-System Diagnostic Depth
Hormones, mitochondria, cellular membranes — assessed together, not in isolation. Because they fail together.
"First you gave me back my life and I assure you it was almost over before I met you. Then, you helped me blossom into the person I once was many years ago. Now, you can take credit for giving me a future that I could have only dreamed about 2 years ago."
