FOUNDER & MEDICAL DIRECTOR

Barbara Johnson, MD
Professional dance training taught Dr. Johnson something most physicians are never taught directly: physical performance is never just mechanical. The body responds to discipline, stress, recovery, sleep, nutrition, mindset, and environment. That early education never left.
What followed was more than three decades in medicine, including years as a general and trauma surgeon — one of the highest-stress environments in clinical practice. She understood the body in acute crisis. What she did not yet fully understand was the biological cost of chronic demand: disrupted sleep, sustained adrenaline, constant responsibility, and years of pushing through.
At 45, Dr. Johnson was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
The diagnosis did not make her reject conventional medicine. It made her ask a different question: what had been happening before disease became visible?
That question led her into functional medicine, cellular biology, mitochondrial health, hormone physiology, stress physiology, psychoneuroimmunology, and longevity medicine. Over the next two decades, that work became the foundation of the Cellular Intelligence Protocol™ — the clinical framework now used at The Johnson Center.
Today, Dr. Johnson leads the practice as physician, medical director, and clinical architect. Her role is to ensure that every patient is evaluated through the same standard: symptoms are read as data, testing is interpreted in context, and care is sequenced according to what the body needs first.

THE PATH THAT BUILT THE PROTOCOL
From Discipline to Diagnosis to Discovery
Age 22-25
The Discipline Foundation
Professional ballet training taught Dr. Johnson that performance depends on the whole system: body, mind, recovery, nutrition, sleep, and environment.
30s to 40s
The Surgical Years
General and trauma surgery placed Dr. Johnson inside one of the highest-stress environments in medicine: long hours, disrupted sleep, sustained adrenaline, life-and-death decisions, and the constant demand for precision under pressure. This also gave her a firsthand understanding of the biological cost of chronic stress, disrupted sleep, and sustained responsibility.
Age 45
The Diagnosis That Changed the Question
A multiple sclerosis diagnosis led her to ask what had been happening before disease became visible: in the immune system, mitochondria, hormones, nervous system, inflammation, and repair capacity.
Age 45 to present
The Work That Became the Protocol
More than two decades of study and clinical refinement became the foundation of the Cellular Intelligence Protocol™ — a sequenced approach to identifying what is keeping the body in defense and restoring the conditions required for repair.
“The diagnosis changed my life because it changed my question. I stopped asking only what disease was present and started asking what had been happening before disease became visible.”

WHAT RESOLUTION ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE
What you're about to hear is not a wellness story. It is a clinical case — a patient whose cellular energy system had stalled at exactly the biological moment the Stanford data predicts, and what it actually took to reverse it. Not manage it. Reverse it.
This is what resolution looks like when the root cause is finally addressed in the sequence biology requires.
WHY IT MATTERS THAT A PHYSICIAN IS IN CHARGE
This Is Not a Wellness Center
With Medical Oversight.
Dr. Johnson holds a fellowship in cellular and longevity medicine and spent 20 years as a surgeon and functional medicine physician before founding The Johnson Center.
That clinical depth is structural, not decorative. It means:
PHYSICIAN-REVIEWED PROTOCOLS
Every treatment plan is researched and reviewed through the clinical lens Dr. Johnson built over three decades of medicine.
FOUR-SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC DEPTH
We assess hormones, thyroid, adrenal/HPA-axis function, GI and inflammatory load, mitochondrial function, metabolic health, and cellular aging markers together — because they interact.
SEQUENCED CARE
We do not add interventions randomly. We ask what the body needs first: clear the alarm, restore the energy, build the resilience..
NO AESTHETICS. NO BIOHACKING THEATER
The Johnson Center is focused on functional health, cellular medicine, and longevity — not cosmetic medicine or trend-based optimization.
Every treatment protocol at The Johnson Center is researched, sequenced, and overseen through the clinical framework Dr. Johnson has built over decades of medicine. The team around her was selected for the same standard: mechanistic thinking, clinical depth, and the patience to work with a patient’s full biology rather than manage symptoms one at a time.
THE TEAM
Every Provider Here Came to
Functional Medicine the Hard Way.
Not through a weekend certification. Through years of watching conventional medicine fail patients — and in several cases, themselves. That's the standard Dr. Johnson built this practice around.
Every practitioner at The Johnson Center has been directly trained in the Cellular Intelligence Protocol™. It is not optional continuing education — it is the clinical foundation of the practice. The Johnson Center only brings on providers who demonstrate the ability to interpret the protocol at the mechanistic level and apply it to help patients achieve measurable outcomes in longevity and optimal health.

Amanda Hudgins, DNP, FNP-C
NURSE PRACTITIONER | BLACKSBURG
Amanda is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner who has been part of The Johnson Center team since 2018. She began as a registered nurse and has since advanced into her current role after earning her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). Her transition into functional medicine was inspired by her own personal health journey as a patient at The Johnson Center, where she experienced firsthand the transformative impact of individualized, root-cause care. Amanda has trained closely with Dr. Johnson for several years, integrating functional medicine principles into her clinical practice. Her approach focuses on identifying and addressing the underlying causes of chronic symptoms through personalized strategies involving nutrition, lifestyle, targeted supplementation, and advanced testing

Kristina McIrvin, FNP-C
NURSE PRACTITIONER | BLACKSBURG
Kristina is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with a strong clinical background in critical care and emergency medicine. Throughout her years in acute care, she treated countless patients suffering from complications of chronic illness and the side effects of long-term medication use. These experiences led her to recognize the profound need for a preventative, root-cause approach to health — one that conventional emergency settings rarely allow time to explore. In 2023, Kristina transitioned to functional medicine by joining the Johnson Center, where she is now able to focus on helping patients prevent, manage, and even reverse chronic conditions through evidence-based, lifestyle-driven care.

WHAT EVERY PATIENT GETS
The Clinical Standard
Physician Reviewed Protocols
Every treatment plan is personally overseen by Dr. Johnson — not delegated to administrative templates.
The Correct Sequence
CDR resolution before bioenergetic reconstruction before hormonal optimization. The order is not a preference. It is what cellular biology requires.
Four-System Diagnostic Depth
Sex Hormones, thyroid, adrenal/HPA Axis and growth hormone— assessed together, not in isolation. Because they fail together.
"First you gave me back my life and I assure you it was almost over before I met you. Then, you helped me blossom into the person I once was many years ago. Now, you can take credit for giving me a future that I could have only dreamed about 2 years ago."

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes The Johnson Center different from other longevity/functional medicine practices in Virginia Beach
The Johnson Center is physician-led — not a wellness center with medical oversight. Dr. Johnson holds a fellowship in cellular and longevity medicine and spent 20 years as a surgeon before founding this practice. Every protocol is personally overseen by her. The difference isn't the technology or the supplements — it's the sequence. Most functional medicine practices address the right problems in the wrong order. We don't.
What is the Cellular Intelligence Protocol™?
It is a sequenced medical framework built around three pillars: Cell Danger Response resolution, Bioenergetic Core reconstruction, and Psychoneuroimmunology. The clinical foundation is this: fatigue, brain fog, hormonal chaos, metabolic dysfunction, and anxiety are not separate problems. They are different expressions of one underlying failure — a stalled cellular energy system. The CIP™ addresses them in the order cellular biology requires.
Does The Johnson Center accept insurance?
No. We are a self-pay practice. That model exists by design — it removes the constraints that prevent insurance-based medicine from doing what we do: extended visits, advanced testing not covered by standard panels, and treatment protocols built around your specific cellular biology rather than approved diagnostic codes. Most bloodwork from Labcorp and Quest are covered by your insurance company. We also provide you with a Superbill, which you may submit this to your insurance company. Some insurances may pay a partial reimbursement if your plan reimburses for seeing a physician 'out-of-network.'
Who is the right patient for this practice?
High-achieving adults — typically mid-40s to early 60s — who are health-conscious, already doing many things right, and still experiencing symptoms conventional medicine has dismissed as normal aging. If you have been told your labs are normal and you know something is still wrong, that is exactly the clinical situation we are built to address.
What happens on the discovery call?
It is 30 minutes. We ask about your symptoms, what you have already tried, and where you are in your biological timeline. We tell you honestly whether our approach is the right fit — and if it isn't, we will say so. No obligation. No pressure. Find out more.

NEXT STEP
You've Been Told Your Labs are Normal. This is Where the Conversation Ends.
The discovery call is 30 minutes. No obligation. We will tell you honestly whether what we do is the right fit for where you are in your biology right now.
The call is complimentary. The information you leave with is not.
